Thanks to sharing yesterday's instant to the Steampunk tag on Tumblr, I now have three more followers who do not do the porn thing. I could definitely do without the blogs who do the porn thing.
I'm more about the romance than the sex. Just saying. But -hey- if you love having looping gifs all over your dash of people doing their thing, then that's your thing. It's just not mine.
Anyway. I'm only just starting to get into Steampunk, so my style right now is what I remember from the books I was forced to read in High School [so, so very many years ago now] and what I recall of both Dickens and Doyle. Add a healthy dollop of the humorously ridiculous and that's about it.
I am doing intermittent research on Victoriana. I tend to absorb style by osmosis, so I shall be embedding myself in Dickens and Doyle again before I write one word of Beauties and the Beastly.
I get the sneaking suspicion that my writing will be a fusion of Charles Dickens, Arthur Doyle, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, and Louis McMaster Bujold as the Token Girl.
I need more good lady writers to read. And yes I know about the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane, I just haven't had the wherewithal to get them. And urban/modern fantasy is kind of wandering away from my target genre. Magic, mysticism, and whatnot will be happening in due course. Either when I get around to writing Once Upon a Time and Space or when I start writing The Kingdom of Sand trilogy in 2020.
For the record, my books-to-write queue is slated to keep me going until 2032. And it's subject to change without notice. For instance: A planned novel entitled, Big F*ckin' Spiders, Mate was trashed because of a recent horror movie issued along the same lines. It was probably for the best. I had little idea what to do with it, anyway.
But regardless, I return to Amalgam Station and its surrounding universe every other year. It's my place. I spend most of my head-time there. Rael's story will happen in 2017. Possibly with a re-telling of RTFM as a prologue.
But for now, I'm finishing Shayde's story, which happens sometime after Rael's story. I usually tell tales in a linear fashion, but I can easily adapt to non-linear as long as I can get most of the facts to line up. I'm an enormous continuity nerd... Inconsistencies bother me.
With luck, and me actually contributing to the Amalgam Wiki for a change, I might be able to keep things straight. Three cheers for writing one's own reference material. Huzzah.
